# Skills-to-employment training and internships for local tech talent

***

**City:** Awka, Nigeria

**Steward:** Ken

**Issue bucket:** ECO - Economy

**Secondary issue bucket:** EDU - Education

**Summary:** Awka’s Circle set out to move local tech talent from job readiness into real work, with a July target of helping at least 20 people into meaningful employment. Over 70 participants took part in CV and application training, with personalised reviews from experienced professionals. The Circle then ran a skills accelerator with Launchpad Community, and about 11 participants secured internships.

***

**The issue:** Awka has a growing pool of young developers and other technical people who are looking for their first opportunity, but few clear routes into paid work. Many have built skills through self-teaching, bootcamps or university, yet struggle to turn them into jobs: they don’t know how to present themselves through a strong CV or application, they lack portfolios or practical experience, and they have no direct link to the local employers and startups that are hiring. Employers, in turn, have no easy way to find and assess local candidates. The result is that talent in Anambra goes unused, or leaves for opportunities elsewhere, even though people with the skills are close by.

**Why was it winnable?** Awka has many young developers and technical people looking for their first opportunity, but few clear routes into work. Circle members already had tech industry experience, so they could train participants directly and use their own networks to connect them with local employers and startups. This meant the Circle could start quickly using skills and relationships it already had, without outside funding or new partners.

**Who was affected?** Young tech talent in Awka, and employers and startups hiring.

**The goal:** Move people from job readiness to real work. The July target was to help at least 20 tech talents secure meaningful employment.

**What they did**:

1. Set a clear target. In July, the Circle aimed to help at least 20 local tech talents move from job readiness into meaningful work.
2. Ran practical CV and job application training. Over 70 participants learned how to write strong CVs and applications.
3. Offered personalised CV reviews. The Circle set up a Google Classroom where experienced professionals gave participants individual feedback on their CVs.
4. Built an opportunity pipeline. The Circle agreed to partner with local startups and companies and to create a Talent Directory so employers could find candidates.
5. Launched a skills accelerator. With Launchpad Community, the Circle ran a hands-on Content Creation and Social Media Management Accelerator, led by a trainer and mentored by practitioners Emma, Lucy and Oma.
6. Placed participants in internships. About 11 accelerator participants secured internships with host companies.
7. Reviewed results. On 5 September, the Circle reviewed progress and identified improvements: better participant selection, more internship places, clearer expectations for interns and hosts, and stronger follow-up.

**Who they worked with:** Launchpad Community, a trainer, mentors, and host companies for internships

**What worked:** Training tied to a real local need, practical rather than theoretical content, practitioner mentors, and partner communities. Having connections and experience through the Circle members to connect the talent directly.

**What didn't work / to improve**: Better participant selection for commitment, more internship places, stronger follow-up on interns, clearer expectations for interns and hosts, more portfolio and application support.

**The outcome:** 80+ registrations, 15+ trained and about 11 internships from the accelerator.

**What was learned:** Follow-up and impact measurement are essential. A structured internship framework (role descriptions, supervisors, check-ins, feedback) is needed.

**What could another Circle replicate?** The staged path from CV training to reviews to a skills accelerator to internships, with a partner community and a talent directory.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://circles.logos.co/parallel-society-playbook/eco-economy-and-cost-of-living/skills-to-employment-training-and-internships-for-local-tech-talent.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
